In-person classes

When you arrive, we'll meet in person and put your Spanish into practice. Because you're learning with a local, our conversations will explore Mexican culture, daily life, and the places you're visiting—giving you an insider's perspective and helping you get the most out of your trip.

Hola, soy Professor Soke.

I'm Luis Sokol, a native Spanish speaker from Mexico City with six years of experience teaching Spanish. Earlier in my career, I taught English in Mexico, so I understand language learning from both the teacher's and the student's perspective. My advanced English helps me anticipate common challenges for English speakers and explain differences between the languages clearly.

My approach is personalized and communication-first—not based on a standard textbook or fixed curriculum. Each lesson is adapted to your level, experience, learning style, and goals so learning feels achievable and rewarding. I believe repetition is essential and that practicing phrases slightly above your current level can gradually expand what you understand and say. Learning is not linear, so there is room to make mistakes and revisit useful language through explanation, practice, repetition, and continued exposure. The goal is steady progress you can notice in daily life and the confidence to communicate without needing flawless Spanish.

What my students say

“I have been very lucky to have Luis as a Spanish teacher for more than two years now, and have really learnt so much thanks to him. Luis's method is not only effective but also inspiring, as he's very knowledgable and always bring interesting topics and excercises. Luis has been keen to listen and adapt to what I wanted to focus on along the way. I can't recommend him more!”

“Luis brings an infectious passion to his Spanish instruction. His one-on-one lessons and curated recommendations of songs, videos and stories helped improve my Spanish speaking and listening skills dramatically in six months. Whether you are a complete beginner, or honing your Spanish fluency, learning with Luis will be engaging, challenging, and lots of fun.”

“Luis’ mastery of both English and Spanish makes him an especially qualified instructor, as it allows the student to ask specific questions and get detailed feedback. He is also friendly and silly, which helps dissipate any qualms around language learning.”

“I have been fortunate to learn Spanish from Luis, and his classes were always engaging, and thoughtful. He’s the kind of teacher who brings his many interests and ideas to class, allowing students to learn how people really speak the Spanish language instead of a bunch of grammar rules and charts. He is patient, attentive, and always ready to adapt his approach to what the students need. I can’t recommend him enough.”

“I have enjoyed every moment of working with Luis! In addition to being a lovely person, Luis has given me so much more confidence in speaking and reading Spanish. One of the aspects of Luis’s teaching style that I value most is his flexibility and willingness to make sure our lessons actually meet my real-life needs. As a result, we split our time between speaking/grammar lessons and reading texts relevant to my professional life. If you want a dynamic teacher with a good sense of humor, Luis is the right person for you!”

“Luis was recommended to me by a friend when I told her I wanted to learn Spanish for my would be in laws. The relationship didn’t last, but now I can confidently say I know Spanish - all due to Luis! I’ve learnt a lot and I appreciate we can talk about all sorts of topics en español. It has been great getting to learn the nuances of Mexican Spanish, practical applications, and more about the man himself.”
